ADHD/Learning Disability Intervention

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder), also called attention-deficit disorder, is a behavior disorder, usually first diagnosed in childhood, which is characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and, in some cases, hyperactivity. These symptoms usually occur together; however, one may occur without the other(s). The symptoms of hyperactivity, when present, are almost always apparent by the age of 7 and may be apparent in very young preschoolers. Inattention or attention-deficit may not be evident until a child faces the expectations of elementary school. Children or adolescents may be diagnosed with a Learning Disorder when their achievement on individually administered, standardized tests in reading, mathematics, or written expression is significantly below what is expected for their age, schooling, or level of intelligence. The umbrella term "Learning Disorders" includes Reading Disorder, Disorder of Written Expression, and Mathematics Disorder that is Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia respectively Treatment sessions for Learning Disability and ADHD are not designed to "cure" the disorder, but to help a child cope with associated behaviors, emotions, and thoughts that come about as a result of having a disability and make them able to lead their lives independently. Most of the children are able to cope with normal schooling after the intervention. Psychotherapy sessions involving Energy Psychology, Hypnotherapy and Craniosacral Therapy are provided at LEAP complemented with Bach Flower Remedies. This when followed with systematic Remedial Education Coaching brings about a good change in the child. Parenting children with ADHD and LD may be difficult and can present challenges that create stress within the family. Counselling in behavior management skills is provided for parents so as to help reduce stress for all family members. Training in behavior management skills for parents occurs in a group setting as well as individually which encourages parent-to-parent support.
