Family Counselling

Around 20 years back India had a negligible divorce rate of around 5%. But survey shows that in the last 10 years divorce rate is increased considerably. When agro based states like Punjab and Haryana are seeing about 150% increase in divorce rate in last ten years, the most literate state Kerala, at the same time has experienced 350% increase in the divorce rate in last 10 years. The plight of children of those who split through divorce is worse. These children grow up without much guidance and control they are easily tempted towards anti-social activities.

There are some groups of intellectuals who support the concept of divorce saying it’s always better to walk out of bad marriages and it is the freedom of women which is seen here and it’s a sign of development. No doubt if women are walking out of marriage due to ill treatment from husband and their in-laws, there is nothing wrong with it. But a study of the cases pending before courts found that 40 per cent of the divorce cases had borne out of discords created by alcoholism and 35 per cent provoked by extramarital relations. Mental problems accounted for 15 per cent divorce cases.

It shows that 90% of the divorce cases are due to low mental health and communication problems among the family, which results in alcoholism, extramarital affairs, and other family issues. So, as popularly believed it is not wife battering that leads to divorce, many problems can be sorted out if the communication between husband and wife had been better.
