Both Counselling and Psychotherapy focus on how people experience, seek to cope with and respond to their everyday lives and life events when they encounter a problem. A problem exists when there is a discrepancy between what you are doing and what you would like to be doing. Many a times people are not able define their problem and hence they do not arrive at any solution. Counselling session concentrate on defining the problem of the client and they are then ready to find solution on their own. Sometimes unconscious blocks appear as main cause of the problem. Number of sessions depends purely on the client, as each case is an unique one. But generally it’s seen that if the client cooperates well, it may take only few weeks or months duration which when compared to medication takes years together. It’s high time that we realize we are not powerless biochemical machines; popping a pill every time we are mentally or physically out of tune is not the answer. Drugs are powerful tools when they are not overused, but the notion of simple drug fixes is fundamentally flawed. Every time a drug is introduced into the body to correct function A, it inevitably throws off function B, C, or D. It is not gene directed hormones and neurotransmitters that control our mind and our body; our beliefs control our mind and body and thus our lives. Ninety five percent or more of the time (for most people ninety nine percent) we run lives from the automatic processor, the subconscious mind. We used to think that if the conscious mind became aware of our issues, it would automatically correct any negative programs downloaded in our subconscious mind. This is why people have the tendency to talk to themselves with the hope of changing limiting subconscious programs. Unfortunately this does not work. The reason being, the subconscious mind is like a tape recorder, it records behaviour and at the push of a button, the program will replay over and over again (your habits). The problem is there is nothing in your subconscious mind that listens to what the conscious mind wants. It simply is a tape recorder, which records everything since your birth till your death and it stores it and keeps replaying it automatically. That’s the reason a habit is many a times so difficult to change. Most of the mental ailments are negative habits formed due to various circumstances in ones life.
One can consciously change the subconscious mind’s programs, but not by talking or by reasoning with it.
